Ortom dragged before UN Rights Agency for assaulting a woman

The Benue state governor has been dragged before the United Nations Human Rights Council in Geneva for assaulting one Ms. Idoko Blessing on Sunday.

A source told journalists that the said petition which was signed by a close family member of Idoko Blessing, Mr. Mathew Idoko, was addressed and sent to the UN Rights body in Geneva last night.

It would be recalled that the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, was on Sunday alleged to have directed the security operatives attached to him to beat up and brutalize Blessing Idoko at the Redeemed Christian Church of God Mercyland parish behind NUJ house Makurdi.

An eyewitness said: ” the victim was brutalized on the order of Governor Ortom just because of her boldness to explain to the governor that he should pay the salaries of the suffering masses in the state”

However, the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Ortom, Mr. Terver Akase, had denied the governor’s involvement in the ill treatment that his security operatives melted on the victim.

Akase said the allegation was just another way by the opposition to discredit the Ortom-led administration in Benue state.

Also, the state publicity secretary of the PDP in Benue state, Mr. Bemgba Iortyom, has condemned the governor’s security operatives who beat the victim to the point of comma.

Mr. Iortyom who expressed his shock through a media note said: “Our attention has been drawn to the news trending on the social media that Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom’s security details violently assaulted one Blessing Idoko at the Maryland Parish of Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCGG) when he went to worship there.

“The lady is said to have approached the governor when he arrived at the premises of the church telling him that there is much suffering in the state as a result of non-payment of salaries, despite promises he had made to the contrary.

“Media reports have it that resultantly the governor had expressed displeasure at the lady’s affront and ordered his security details to remove her from his presence, a development which resulted in violent assault on the lady leaving her with welts and bruises all over her body.

“If this is true then it is an unfortunate addition to the already growing profile of Gov. Ortom as one highly intolerant of views critical of his government, a tendency he has exhibited many times so far as governor.

“The Benue State governor has already sent security operatives after a number of critics and dragged them to court for publishing information critical of his administration.

“But more injurious to the social fabric of the Benue society is the culture of hate and vendetta being foisted on the people through the activities of the media management aparatchick of the government headed by Tahav Agerzua with the governor’s tacit approval.

“In the most hawkish posture ever witnessed in the history of this state, Ortom’s media Headboy, Tahav Agerzua, has recruited a team of cyber-thugs whose sole brief is to malign critics of the government in the most obscene manner, so as to stiffle objective analysis of its performance.

“It is clear that with his pathetically poor performance track-record, Gov. Ortom is highly allergic to criticism and rabidly intolerant of it, a fact which makes the news of the violent assault on Blessing Idoko readily believable.

“Moreover, the manner the cyber thugs of the governor have swarmed to his defence is highly suspect, particularly with their disjointed and incoherent approach, which has involved the curious allegation that the attack on the lady was by a rival cult group to one she belongs in.

“This alleged assault on Blessing Idoko may just be another ugly expose on the ugly underbelly of a misfiring and incompetent administration.
