Plans by the Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, to officially defraud the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) of the total sum of 13, 120, 470.00 million under the excuse of attending to a business in China has been unraveled.
Nigerian Concord’s source at the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) on Thursday evening made available to our reporter, a secret memo signed by the Director of Public Relations and Protocol, Ministry of Information and Culture, Dama N.P.D.
According to Dama, it was the Minister for Information, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, that directed that the memo be sent to the NBC in order to get the purported loan from the Commission.
The memo which was dated May 11, 2016 revealed that the Minister wants to travel to China for an undisclosed business on May 15, 2016.
The memo which was attached to this report pressed further that the Minister needs the over N1.3million loan to be granted to his ministry by the NBC within immediately so he can proceed on the trip.
The memo reads in parts: “I am directed to inform you that the Honourable Minister for Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, is proceeding on an official assignment to China on 15th May, 2016.
“The Honourable Minister has therefore approved that you (NBC) loan the Ministry the sum of N13, 120, 470.00million only to enable him and the team embark on the China trip.
Findings by this newspaper shows that the trip was not an official as the Presidency is not aware of it.
Our NBC source disclosed that the planned trip is just another way to siphone public funds as no serious explanation about the business that the minister is going to do in China was made in the memo.
The source however continued that the loan would be granted since the Commission is directly under the supervision of the Federal Ministry of Information.
“Even if there is any serious business to be undertaken in China or anywhere in the world by the minister, why would he be asking for a loan from the NBC since the Commission isn’t a loan-lending agency? This clearly shows that the trip doesn’t have the approval of the federal government which ordinarily should be the one to release funds for it” the source said.
