BIRS Fraud: Operation Zenda arrests Board Secretary, Godwin Akor
Nigerian Concord Newspaper
Operatives of Operation Zenda in Benue State have arrested the Secretary to the state’s Board of Internal Revenue Service, BIRS, Mr. Godwin Akor.
Nigerian Concord gathered from sources at the security agency that Akor was arrested in connection with the multi-million Naira fraud rocking the Board.
According to our sources, Akor who was arrested two days ago in Makurdi by men of Operation Zenda had been operating illegal POS points where his personal tax agents do remmit N1.2 million to his account every week.
Information at the disposal of this newspaper showed that there are two other top officials of the Board that the police is investigating in connection with the financial scam at the Benue tax agency.
According to police source, the two top officials will be arrested immediately after they have been found culpable in course of investigation.
“We cannot just arrest people without evidence that they had committed an offense. And that is why we haven’t reached out to the two top officials of the Board that had been fingered in the fraud” one of the police sources said.
But in a telephone chat with the Executive Chairman of the Board, Mr. Andrew Ayabam, Nigerian Concord gathered that it was the Board that sent a petition to the Office of the State Commissioner of Police who later transferred the case to the Special Anti Robbery Squad, SARS.
Ayabam said: “It was Akor himself that sent the petition to the Office of the State Commissioner of Police but we don’t know how he got involved during the investigation, and he was arrested and detained.
“Some people in connection with the fraud are meant to be arraigned in court today and we are following the situation”
All efforts to reach the Legal Adviser of the Board,Mr. George Usongo, proved abortive as he didn’t answer all the calls made to his telephone lines. He also didn’t reply to the SMS sent to his phone as at the time of filing this report.
