Nigerian Concord Newspaper
This newspaper can authoritatively report that the former governor of Benue state, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, was arrested by the Department of State security service, DSS, on Tuesday afternoon over his attendance at the defection of Chief John Akperashi, a chieftain of the All progressive Congress, APC.
The APC Chieftain decamped to the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Last week Friday in Adikpo Kwande local government area of Benue.
It was reported that not less than 5,000 APC supporters alongside Chief John Akpereshi decamped to the PDP during the defection ceremony where they were officially received by Dr. Gabriel Suswam.
One of Suswam’s Aides who pleaded not to be mentioned said that since his arrest on Tuesday, he had been denied access to his lawyers, family members and associates.
The aide pressed further that he is just being kept in detention without being interrogated or asked to make any statement.
He however alleged that the DSS had been turned to arena of politics which is being used by politicians to intimidate and harasse political opponents.
The aide further added that, the recent arrest has nothing to do with the Governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, but some political bigwigs in Benue North East Senatorial District who were said to have written the petitions which alleged that the former governor is the mastermind of the killings in the state.
Saying that attempts by Suswam’s lawyers to see him yesterday were terminated by the DSS operatives, the aide noted that his arrest is purely political. “They are afraid to have him contest for the senatorial seat in Zone A in 2019” he said.
Dr. Gabriel Suswam, was on Tuesday invited by Department of State Service, DSS for some interactions and has since been kept in custody.
It was learned that he was invited by the agency on Tuesday over a petition by a high ranking politician, alleging that he (Suswam) was habouring Mr. Terwase Akwaza, a.k.a ‘Gana’.
