…Benue govt to change LG tenure to one year

Nigerian Concord Newspaper

Secret plans by the governor of Benue state, Samuel Ortom, to illegally dissolved the local government executives in the state have been exposed.

Nigerian Concord gathered that the plans came as a result of the refusal of about ten out of the twenty three local governments chairmen in the state to decamp with him to the PDP.

It was also gathered that the governor had made several attempts to force the ten adamant chairmen, their vices and councillors into the PDP. “They have since told him that they would not shift their loyalty away from Senator Akume” a government house source hinted this newspaper this evening.

According to our investigations, the governor had struck a deal with the former APC lawmakers that decamp with him to PDP two weeks ago in order to force the leadership of the State House of Assembly to change the tenure of the council bosses to one year.

Recalled that the council bosses who were elected into offices about a year ago were sworn-in to spend two years in their respective offices.

“If the governor succeeds in using his loyalists at the House of Assembly to change the tenure of the council bosses to one year, then it means that they have all served out their tenure since they were elected about a year ago” the government house source further hinted.

Another plan being made by the governor is to re-appoint the thirteen council bosses that decamped with him to the PDP as caretakers in their respective local governments pending the time he will conduct another local government elections.

It would be recalled that the governor has since sent members of the State Livestock Guards to retrieve official cars which he just gave to the council bosses from the ten chairmen who had refused to join him in PDP.

Governor Ortom had two months ago given twenty three 2017 model Toyota Hilux Vans to the twenty three local governments chairmen as their official cars.

Just three days ago, members of the Livestock Guards waylaid the executive chairman of Apa local government, Mr. Danjuma Oche Solomon, and retrieved his own official car at gun point.

Report has it that the car was immediately driven to the government house in Makurdi after it was taken away from Hon. Danjuma Oche.

According to reports, the Apa Council boss was reportedly driving out of his Makurdi home when the gunmen attacked him and took the car away from him.

It was learnt that the gunmen beat the Chairman to the point of stupor before some good Samaritans could rush him to an unknown hospital for an emergency treatment.

Speaking to Nigerian Concord over the development, the state chairman of APC, Comrade Abba Yaro, condemned the development, saying that no one should be forced to join the governor’s new party.

Abba Yaro continued that the action was babrbaric and undemocratic, stressing that the governor should allow the APC council bosses to go about with their legitimate duties without any form of harassment.

How words: “It was very bad for armed men to maltreat a serving council boss in that manner just because of politics. The man has refused to follow the governor to the PDP, and that doesn’t say that he should be harassed at will”

Abba Yaro however called on the state police command to quickly look into the issue in order to stop such from happening again.
