VP’s visit: Benue people mock Ortom for campagning for Buhari at IDPs camp
Nigerian Concord Newspaper
People of Benue state have taken to social media to make mockery of the state governor, Samuel Ortom, for allowing campaigns for President Muhammadu Buhari reelection bid at the Daudu IDPs camp yesterday by vice president Yemi Osinbajo.
It would be recalled that Osinbajo who claimed in a press statement issued by his media team on Monday that he would be in Benue state to console with the people over Fulani killings turned the first stage of the visit to a political campaign for Buhari’s reelection when he visited the IDPs camp in Daudu yesterday.
Nigerian Concord’s reporter who was at Yemi Osinbajo’s visit to the IDPs camp reported that the Vice president and his host, Governor Samuel Ortom, betrayed the hope of the victims of the Fulani attacks and every other person at the event when the APC Change slogans were being chanted by them (Osinbajo and Ortom) without any word of consolation.
According to our reporter, the vice president, when called to address the IDPs, was singing praises of the Buhari-led administration.
He was also accused by Benue people of stating the need for the people of Benue to vote for Buhari in 2019 instead of sympathizing with them.
Making mockery of Governor Ortom, Benue social media activists explained that it was a pity that Osinbajo being a pastor could turn such a sensitive visit to the IDPs camp to a political rally.
They said the act alone signifies that Governor Ortom had sold the lives of the people of the state to President Buhari and the Fulani herdsmen who have been killing innocent people since May, 2015.
According to them, the vice president is not in Benue to sympathize with the Benue people over Fulani attacks but to launder the president’s battered image ahead of 2019.
Making further mockery about Ortom, they stated that Fulani killings were deliberately halted by those behind it so as to pave way for Osinbajo’s charade, adding that the killings will surely resume once he (VP) finishes his visit.
The social media activists also berated the governor for campaigning for the president at the IDPs camp yesterday at the expense of the victims of Fulani attacks.
They however urged Ortom to explain why the massacre had stopped since the arrest of his special security assistant, Alhaji Aliyu Tershaku, by men of the Nigerian security agencies.
They also asked the governor to explain the N1.4 billion which was found in Tershaku’s UBA bank account. The funds were said to have been deposited by the Benue state government in many tranches.
