Former governor of Benue state and chairman of the Electoral Committee of the December 9th PDP national convention, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, yesterday promised to conduct the most credible convention of the party.
Speaking at the inaguration of all the committees that will see to the convention, Suswam expressed his commitment to dispassionately deliver on his assignment as Convention Electoral Committee Chairman, assuring that he has no preferred candidate for any of the elective positions at the Convention.
He faulted the claims that his closeness to any individual or group within the party could be an hindrance to his assigned duty as Chairman of the Electoral Committee, stressing that as a loyal member of the PDP since its formation in 1998, he is close to most of the party leaders from across the country.
On the the views that ongoing cases of graft against him in the courts make him ineligible for his present assignment, Suswam averred that he is still innocent of any accusations against him until proven guilty by the courts, maintaining that it will therefore, be unjust to hinder him from carrying on with his normal life or rendering services to the nation whenever required.
Suswam further stated that as a two-term member of the National Assembly and also a two-term Governor of Benue State, on the platform of the party, he has handled sensitive assignments in the party over the years and has never been found wanting.
He promised not make an exception of the current assignment, acknowledging that much of the fortunes of the party, and indeed the democratic process in the country, depend on the outcome of the forthcoming Convention.
In his reactions, the PDP National Convention Planning Committee Chairman and Delta State Governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa, expressed implicit faith that he will deliver creditably well on the assignment.
The Delta State Governor was reacting to views expressed in some quarters that the choice of Suswam as Electoral Committee Chairman is inappropriate owing to his alleged closeness to the camp of one of the chairmanship aspirants.
Speaking on Channels Television yesterday Gov. Okowa stated that Suswam as Chairman of the Electoral Committee will not be running a one-man show, but will be working with experienced party leaders on the committee to deliver a free and fair electoral process at the convention.
He further reassured that the Electoral Committee is composed of credible individuals drawn from all parts of the country who represent the collective resolve of the party to move forward, and as such will not be manipulated by any individual or group against its larger interests.
Okowa also strongly emphasised that all committees will be duly supervised by the Convention Planning Committee to ensure strict adherence to set standards and guidelines to ensure fairness and transparency in the conduct of the business of the convention.
