Ortom loots N450 million for wife’s trip to Morocco
Nigerian Concord Newspaper
Despite his inability to pay workers salaries for over a year, the executive governor of Benue state, Mr. Samuel Ortom, has approved the sum of N450 million for a private of his wife and the first lady of the state, Dr. Eunice Ortom, to Morocco.
According to documents available to Nigerian Concord, the huge funds were approved by the governor through the Ministry of Finance under the guise that Mrs Ortom is attending a Summit with First Lady Aisha Buhari in Morocco.
But another document which our reporters got from the media Office of the First Lady of the federation indicates that Mrs Aisha Buhari didn’t actually extend any invitation to Eunice Ortom to follow her on the trip to Morocco.
The document says that Aisha had been invited by the Moroccan government to attend the Nigeria/Morocco Business Women Summit which takes place from today, 14th November, till the 18th November, 2017.
According to the document, Aisha will also be honoured as the Grand patron of the Summit, and as a result of this, the first lady of the federation extended official invitations to wives of few governors to go with her on the trip.
The document however excludes Dr. Eunice Ortom’s name as she was not part of Aisha Buhari’s entourage.
Our presidency source said that Governor Ortom’s lobby to ensure that his wife was put on the entourage failed but he decided to use the state funds to finance the Benue first lady and some female politicians in the state to go on the Morocco trip.
The documents available to this newspaper explain that the governor immediately directed the finance ministry to release a sum of N450 million to his wife for the trip.
According to the governor’s memo to the finance ministry, those that will be on Eunice Ortom’s entourage are Hon. Mrs. Ladi Isegbe Ajene, Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr (Mrs) Magdalyne Dura, Special Adviser to the Governor on International Cooperation, SDGs and NEPAD, Mrs Juliana Akange Audu and Mrs Mwuese Ubebe, Local Government Council Chairpersons of Makurdi and Konshisha respectively.
The entourage also includes three women from the three Senatorial Districts namely, Mrs. Vera Akua (Zone A), Mrs. Rhoda Ako (Zone B) and Mrs. Lydia Okwori (Zone C).
