Suswam mustn’t die in EFCC detention, rights group warns Osinbajo, Ortom

Nigeria Human Rights Crusaders (NHRC) has warned vice president Yemi Osinbajo and Benue state governor, Mr. Samuel Ortom, to ensure that no evil befalls a former governor of the state, Dr. Gabriel Suswam, as he is being detained ‘unjustly’ by the EFCC on the directive of the vice president.
The group which issued this dire warning in a media note which was posted on social media this morning added that it is time for the public to understand that Suswam’s ordeal is nothing but a political persecution as a result of his popularity in the state and the entire North Central.
Signed by its National President, Comrade George Okechukwu, NHRC also threatened to take the case of political persecution against Dr. Suswam to the United Nations Human Rights Council if the EFCC fails to release him immediately.
According to the Human Rights group, Professor Osinbajo has allowed himself to be foolishly used by Governor Ortom to illegally incarcerate Suswam and some other innocent opposition leaders.
The group wondered why Osinbajo often refuses to investigate any allegation brought to him against Suswam before ordering Nigerian security agencies to incarcerate him unjustly.
“Even though the EFCC did warn the vice president against detaining Suswam illegally, he still have his presidential order that he be detained as demanded by Governor Ortom.
“The vice president should show that he is a true pastor in the Redeemed Church by leading by examples. He is a man of God and that is why Nigerians will continue to wonder why he is soiling his hands with the blood of innocent people.
“He did this same evil against Suswam and the entire Benue people by ordering the DSS to detain him for over two months early this year. He (Osinbajo) has again done same evil to the former governor by illegally ordering the EFCC to invite and detain him over an allegation which he had earlier been detained for by the EFCC, DSS, ICPC and the IG Special Investigation Panel.
“The vice president is hereby advised to stay away from Benue politics and stop supporting Governor Ortom’s political persecution against Dr. Suswam whom both of them believe is a threat to the APC chances in 2019.
“We also want Professor Osinbajo to quickly order for Suswam’s release so as to prove to the whole world that he is not supporting Ortom’s evil plots against him as a result of their membership in the same Redeemed Church.
“As regards the report of a plot to poison Suswam in the EFCC detention and claim that he dies as a result of cardiac arrest, we want to assure the public that we shall Investigate this allegation seriously” the statement reads in parts
NHRC however warned Osinbajo, Ortom and the EFCC to remember the crisis which erupted when the late MKO Abiola was murdered by the military government which later claimed that he died of cardiac arrest.
The group also urged Osinbajo to ask Ortom to explain and give his own proof that Suswam is making Benue state ungovernable for him before taking an illegal position.
