Benue PDP exposes Sherrif’s ties with Ortom, APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Benue State has exposed what it called a ties between a former national chairman of the party, Alhaji Ali Modu Sherrif, and the state governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, including his party, All Progressive Congress.
The opposition party which said this in a press statement signed by the party’s authentic chairman in the state, Hon. John Ngbede, stated that the visit of the former PDP national chairman, Senator Sherrif, to Benue state yesterday was not in connections with the party’s activities.
It also added that the visit of Senator Sherrif who has been constantly reported in the media as the person behind the Boko Haram Sect was just to further cement the ties between himself and the APC-led government of Governor Samuel Ortom.
The statement pressed further that no national leader of the PDP visiting the state on legitimate party business would completely shun the Party’s State Secretariat and prefer to consort with leaders of another political party as Sherrif did.
Saying it was an act of utmost political recklessness for functionaries of the APC-controlled Ortom administration in the state to be seen playing active part in the visit of Sherrif and taking up supposed positions on the purported arrangement of a Sherrif faction of the party, the Benue PDP said this only goes to buttress the suspicion that the APC has all along been the hand playing out the Sherrif saga against the PDP.
The party wondered why Ortom had to extend to Sherrif compliments of State protocol and courtesy including official transport and security escort when he has always refused the PDP in the state use of public spaces for its functions, even including in May this year when the party was denied space to hold its state congress for the election and inauguration of its State Exco.
“Subsisting court judgments have given legitimacy to the National Caretaker Committee of the PDP led by Senator Ahmed Makarfi as its highest leadership organ duly mandated and running the affairs of the party, with all statutory organs and members of the party at the national level and in the 36 states of the federation and the FCT Abuja, the 11 state governors on the platform of the party and the National Assembly Caucus all loyal to it.
“It is unfortunate that Senator Sherrif as a former national chairman of the party has chosen to stand as a stumbling block to its peace, unity and progress, a role he is playing obviously with the collusion of external forces intent on undermining the party and its resurgent popularity with the people where the ruling APC has failed woefully in keeping to its campaign promises.
“Sherrif was used in the Edo and Ondo governorship elections to help manipulate victory for the APC against a more popular PDP, and he has come to Benue, obviously on the invitation and sponsorship of the Ortom government which is mortally afraid of the robust opposition being offered by the PDP.
“This visit of Sherrif to the state, from all indications, is the another desperate measure by the APC-led Ortom government against the PDP, at a time the ruling government is under severe pressure to conduct local government polls which it has shied away from since coming to office, for fear of the losing, owing to its poor performance track-record and an attendant mounting ill-will towards it from the suffering masses.
“We hereby call on our teeming party faithful across the state to remain calm and not be moved by any rumours and misinformation making the rounds regarding Senator Sherrif’s visit.
“The Benue State Chapter of the PDP, composed of the John Ngbede-led State Executive Committee, Local Govt. and Ward Executive Committees, statutory caucuses of the three senatorial districts, Local Government and Ward Stakeholders Forums, State Assembly Caucus and majority membership, all remain intact and loyal to the Senator Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Party” the statement reads in parts.
